How your dentist can help you beat bad breath

Your dentist should be your first port of call if you experience persistent bad breath. At Healing Touch Dental Hospital and Implant Centre, we focus firmly on preventative dentistry – stopping problems before they start. With regular visits to the practice to see the dentist and hygienist, we can help you to beat bad breath for good.

Bad-breath What causes bad breath?

Bad breath, or halitosis, is a common problem; most people will experience temporary bad breath at some point in their life. It has many causes – eating strong-smelling foods including garlic, onions, and spicy dishes can all cause temporary halitosis, as can consuming a lot of coffee or alcohol.

Consuming such foods in moderation and brushing your teeth after every meal are excellent ways to combat these temporary breath issues.

Some medical conditions, including sinusitis, bronchitis, and diabetes, as well as infections of the throat, nose, or lungs, can all cause persistent bad breath. If your dentist suspects this could be the underlying cause of the problem, they will refer you to your GP.

The most common cause of persistent bad breath, however, is poor dental hygiene. If you do not brush and floss at least twice a day, and fail to regularly visit both the dentist and hygienist, particles of food can get trapped between your teeth, leading to a build-up of dental plaque bacteria that releases smelly gases.

Healing Touch Dental Hospital and Implant Centre  focuses on preventative dentistry, and we recommend that you see your dentist and hygienist at least once every six months for a health check and professional tooth clean. Some people need to come in more regularly, and you should always follow the advice of your dentist.

Halitosis is also a common symptom of gum disease. At Healing Touch Dental Hospital and Implant Centre we can spot the early signs of gum disease, which should be treated as soon as possible.
